Quick answer: Plan 1 plate per guest for plated service, 1.25 to 2 for a buffet, and 3 to 5 small plates each at a cocktail party. For glasses, count drink types, not heads: 1 water glass per guest, plus 1 glass per guest per drink type offered. Then add 10β20% for breakage.
The number of plates you need is set by how the food is served, and the number of glasses is set by how many different drinks you're pouring. Guest count is only the multiplier at the end.
This is why the advice you find online looks so wildly inconsistent. One page says one plate per guest, another says three, and a wedding forum thread says "we ordered 250 for 100 people and ran out." All three are true. They're describing a plated dinner, a buffet with stations, and a party where nobody washed anything. Once you name the service style, the spread mostly closes.
The event rental trade has known this for decades β it's how they build a quote. It just doesn't make it into consumer articles, which tend to publish a single number and leave you to discover the variable at 7pm on the night.
Plates: it's the service style
A plated dinner needs exactly one dinner plate per guest per course, because a server brings it and takes it away. A buffet needs more, because guests go back for seconds and β this is the whole mechanism β hygiene convention and most caterers say they should take a clean plate when they do. That second trip is the entire difference between 1.0 and 2.0.

Dessert and salad plates are counted separately and almost always at 1 per guest, since they're used once. Add them on top rather than folding them into the dinner-plate figure β conflating the two is where the "three plates per guest" rule of thumb comes from, and it's an unhelpful way to express it.
The disagreement worth knowing about
On buffets specifically, the trade does not agree, and we're not going to average it away. Party Rental Ltd β one of the largest rental houses on the US East Coast β states plainly that "1.25 plates per guest will suffice for smaller buffets." Massive Group says "1.5β2 plates per guest since many people will return for seconds." Curated Events has published 2.5 dinner plates per guest for a buffet in one article and 1β1.25 for a casual buffet in another. That's a twofold spread inside a single company.
Our read: the honest variable underneath is whether the buffet is a meal or a grazing station. A carved main with two sides is one trip for most people. A long table of small dishes people pick at over two hours is three or four. If you're between the two, 1.5 is the safe middle β but buy it as a decision, not as an average of other people's numbers.
Glasses: it's the drink menu
Here the misconception is sharper. Almost nobody needs "a glass per guest." At a seated dinner you need one glass per guest for every distinct drink on the table, because a red glass and a white glass are different objects and nobody drinks red from the flute. Massive Group puts it exactly: "One per type of wine served. If you're offering both red and white, have one of each per guest."
At a bar, the model changes again. Rental firms count glasses against drinks poured, not people β because guests set a glass down, forget it, and get a fresh one. Reventals is blunt about it: "it's safest to estimate one glass per drink served."

That bottom row is the most useful formula in the whole subject. Party Rental Ltd's worked example: 100 guests at a three-hour cocktail party needs (1.5 Γ 100) + (1 Γ 100) + (1 Γ 100) = 350 glasses. Add specialty glassware only where it's genuinely needed. Chase Canopy suggests, per 100 guests, about 20 martini glasses, 20 rocks glasses if you're pouring scotch or bourbon, and 40 more flutes if there's a champagne bar rather than a single toast. The variable that halves the number: washing
Rental quantities assume nothing gets washed. That assumption is invisible and it is doing an enormous amount of work, which is why rental guidance looks absurd to anyone hosting at home with a dishwasher.
Two rental firms publish the correction. Lakes Region Tent & Event and Reventals both state that if staff are washing glassware on site during the event, you can cut the glass count by 25%. Lakes Region adds that even without staff, you can take off 10%, because some guests will simply ask for a refill in the glass they're holding. Lasting Impressions makes the same point operationally: train the bar to ask "same glass?" and the requirement drops on its own.
At home, with someone running a dishwasher between courses, you are effectively in permanent-wash mode. Two full sets of plates and glasses will comfortably run a party that a rental quote would size at four.
Breakage: 10β20%, and it's real
Every rental source checked for this guide adds a buffer, and they agree on the number more closely than they agree on anything else: 10β20% above your final count. Massive Group applies it to both plates and glassware, "to cover breakage, last-minute guests, or accidental double service." Curated Events calls it a service buffer and raises it to 15β25% for specialty glassware at stations, where glasses cycle fastest.
For 100 guests that's 10 to 20 extra of each item. Take the top of the range for outdoor events, stone or tile floors, and anything with dancing.
Worked example: 50 guests, buffet, wine and beer
- Dinner plates: 50 Γ 1.5 = 75, plus 15% = 86
- Dessert plates: 50 Γ 1 = 50, plus 15% = 58
- Water glasses: 50 Γ 1 = 50, plus 15% = 58
- Wine glasses (red and white): 50 Γ 2 = 100, plus 15% = 115
- Beer glasses: Chase Canopy's β of headcount = 17, plus 15% = 20

A word on who's counting
Every figure on this page comes from a company that rents you tableware by the piece. There is no government standard and no trade body publishing portion guidance for plates and glasses β we looked. Rental firms are the only people who have systematically counted, which makes them the best available evidence and gives them a direct financial interest in the higher end of every range. A short quote costs them a furious phone call; a generous one costs them nothing.
Treat these as experienced operational practice, not a standard. The service-style and drink-type structure is sound and consistent across every source. The absolute numbers, particularly the buffet multiplier and the breakage buffer, are the ones to read sceptically and shade downward if you're washing as you go.
