The plate figure counts courses and the cup figure counts hours
Neither is per guest, and that is the whole problem. Someone hosting sixty people buys a sixty-count plate pack and a fifty-count sleeve of cups, because every headline on the internet reads X per guest. At a four-hour buffet the real need is roughly 240 plates and 310 cups — four times and six times the naive buy. The failure is silent until an hour in, when the sleeve is empty and half the “used” cups are standing around the garden still full.
ECO-Lipak states the plate half directly: count eating occasions, not guests — “how many plate moments will guests have?” A multi-course dinner uses three plates a head; a picnic with pre-plated food uses one. Massive Group encodes the same thing for plated service as one plate per course.
Party Rental Ltd encodes the cup half: 1.5 glasses for the first hour, plus one per guest per additional hour. Their own worked example is 100 guests over 3 hours → 350 glasses, not 100. Reventals gives the mechanism — guests do not return glasses to the bar, they switch drinks, set one down and take a fresh one, and staff clear half-full glasses from tables.

Which is why duration is a required input above and the arithmetic is printed next to the answer rather than hidden behind it. Most competing supply calculators omit hours entirely, which is precisely how they produce a wrong number that looks reasonable. If you have staff collecting and washing glassware during the event, the washing toggle cuts the total by 25%.
How many cups per person at a party?
Plan 1.5 cups for the first hour and one more per guest for every hour after — so a four-hour party needs about 4.5 cups a guest, not one. Reventals explains why: guests set drinks down, switch beverages, or take a fresh glass at the bar rather than reusing one, so the safe estimate is one glass per drink served. If you have staff collecting and washing glassware during the event, you can cut the total by about 25%.
How many plates for 50 guests?
It depends entirely on service style, not headcount. For a buffet, plan 1.5–2 dinner plates per guest because people return for seconds — 75 to 100 dinner plates for fifty people, plus 50 side plates, 50 dessert plates and a 10–20% breakage buffer. For a plated dinner it is one plate per course. For a cocktail party, three to five small plates per person, because guests take a fresh one at every station.
How many restrooms do I need for 100 guests?
Two to three units for an event of up to four hours, working from a baseline of roughly one per 50–75 guests. Go longer than four hours and increase the count by 15–30%; serve alcohol and add another 15–20% on top — both adjustments the calculator applies automatically. At least 5% of your units should be accessible, minimum one for any public event, and you want one handwashing station per four to six restrooms.
