The standard drinks formula is wrong for anything hot
Two drinks in the first hour and one an hour after is the rule every bar guide runs on, and it over-buys mulled wine badly. Hot drinks get sipped. A mug that has to cool before the first mouthful paces itself, and nobody knocks back four in an evening. So this calculator uses rates measured against the job the drink is doing, not the clock: 1.5 mugs as a welcome drink, 2 alongside other drinks, 3 if it is the point of the evening.

Servings per bottle is a meaningless number unless someone states the pour. Three good recipes claim 5, 5 and 7.5 servings from a bottle. They do not disagree about mulled wine; they disagree about whether a glass holds 128 ml or 218 ml. Once you normalise for that, they land in the same place — which is why mug size is an input here and not an assumption. At 150 ml a diluted bottle gives 6.4 mugs, and this rounds it down to 6, because running out is worse than the alternative.
Cider means two different drinks. In the US, shop “apple cider” is unfermented juice with no alcohol in it. In the UK and Australia, cider is fermented by law and runs 4–5.5% ABV. Scale a British recipe for twenty American guests and you have served twenty people alcohol they were not expecting — a worse failure than getting the volume wrong, and the reason the drink selector has two cider entries rather than one.
And the pot is the real constraint. A 5-litre stockpot or a large slow cooker holds roughly 33 mugs, so one pot is a welcome drink for about 20 people, or an evening for 11. Past that you are reheating in batches from cold, which takes 20 to 30 minutes. Plan a second pot rather than a second batch.
How many bottles of mulled wine for 20 people?
About five bottles if it is a welcome drink people have on arrival, or ten if mulled wine is the main drink across a three-hour evening. A 750 ml bottle diluted with juice and a slug of spirit makes roughly 960 ml, which is six 150 ml mugs. Treat the ten-bottle figure with some suspicion at the top end — almost nobody drinks mulled wine exclusively for three hours, and it is a lot of simmering. How many mugs does a bottle of mulled wine make?
Six, at a 150 ml pour. The wine dilutes from 750 ml to about 960 ml once juice, water and a spirit go in — that is 6.4 mugs, rounded down to six on the grounds that running out is worse than having spares. If you are using large Christmas-market mugs the answer drops to three or four, which is exactly why the published figures disagree so wildly: they are quoting different glasses, not different recipes.
Does mulled wine still have alcohol in it?
Yes, and more than most people assume. Dilution alone takes a 13% wine to about 10% before any heat. The USDA retention factors people quote — 40% of the alcohol left after 15 minutes of simmering — were measured on stirred, often uncovered cooked dishes, not a lidded pot held below a simmer, so applying them here is an extrapolation rather than a measurement. Keep the pot below 78°C (172°F), the boiling point of ethanol, and you lose far less than the charts suggest. It also stops the spices turning bitter.
