The formula — and why three wrong ones are circulating
A champagne tower is a square pyramid. Each glass in an upper layer sits in the diamond-shaped gap where four glasses below meet, so the top layer is 1 glass, the next is 2×2, the next 3×3, and so on.
That makes the total the square pyramidal number:
Glasses = n(n + 1)(2n + 1) ÷ 6
So a 4-tier tower is 16 + 9 + 4 + 1 = 30 glasses, and a 5-tier is 25 + 16 + 9 + 4 + 1 = 55.
This matters because several popular guides publish different numbers. Some use a triangular pyramid formula and tell you a 5-tier needs 35 glasses. Others use a flat triangular number and say 15. At least one major crystal brand states the correct rule and then lists totals exactly four glasses short at every tier. If you buy from those numbers, your tower is missing a layer. We show the per-layer breakdown above so you can count it yourself before you order.
Do I need coupes, or will flutes work?
Coupes. Flutes physically cannot stack — the bowl is too narrow to catch the base of the glass above, and the high centre of gravity means a light knock topples the lot. Coupes have a wide, shallow bowl that both nests securely and catches the cascade. The trade-off is real: coupes lose fizz faster than flutes. That is the price of the display.
How many bottles do I actually need?
It depends entirely on fill level, which is why published answers vary about twofold. A cascade pour leaves glasses roughly half full at about 100 ml each, so a 750 ml bottle covers about 8 glasses. A full pour of 150 ml gets you 5 glasses per bottle. The calculator uses whichever you pick and rounds up.
How big should the coupes be?
Tower coupes are typically 6–7.5 oz (180–222 ml). Wider rims stack more securely, so favour a broad, shallow bowl over a deep one.
How do I keep it from collapsing?
Use a solid, completely level table — banquet-style wood, never a folding table on carpet. Place each upper glass at the exact centre point where four glasses meet. Keep the tower at arm's length from the crowd, and pour slowly and steadily from directly above the top glass. If it is your first time, build 4×4 rather than attempting 6×6.
